Promoted tweets and ads have been displayed in user feeds for some time and now Twitter has found a new place for ads to live. Last week Twitter began testing ads within user profiles. Previously, you could click on a user’s profile and see all of their activity in feed format. The layout remains the same, however mixed in with the user’s activity are “Suggested By Twitter” advertisements.
The promoted tweets appear in both desktop and mobile formats, however they will not appear in the feeds if the user profile is verified.
Greg Finn of Marketing Land raised some interesting points regarding these promoted tweets within the profiles of verified users. What if a brand has a competitor’s promoted tweet appear in their profile timeline? What if an athlete has a sponsorship relationship with a company and that company’s competitor has the ability to promote their brand on that athlete’s profile? These factors, among others, seem to be the logical reasoning behind avoiding the verified user profiles.
