IDC, which is widely regarded to as the premier global market intelligence firm, just released its latest devices forecast for this year’s fourth quarter. They are predicting that tablets will surpass PC shipments (combination of both desktops and laptops) for the upcoming quarter. IDC believes PCs will still outnumber tablets for the entire year, but expects tablets to fully eclipse by 2015.
The expectation, according to IDC, is for the PC market to have flat growth moving forward for the next couple years during its forecast time frame. Greg Sterling of Marketing Land does not agree with the IDC prediction and neither do I. Sterling had this to say about the prediction, “Only if the enterprise market compensates for declines in the consumer market will we see flat or modestly positive growth for PCs.” I am in total agreement with Sterling here. The only possible scenario, albeit still very unlikely, for the PC market to remain flat is for the enterprise business market to increase their purchasing. The fact is, people are buying fewer PCs and more tablets and this isn’t going to change in the near future.
